Turnstile returned to Pittsburgh for the first time in four years last night, still out on the road supporting their newest album, Never Enough. Here’s the shots and thoughts.
1. Man, this band got big.
The last time Turnstile was in Pittsburgh was 2022. They played the indoor portion of Stage AE, which holds around 2,500 people. Now they’ve upgraded to the outdoor stage, and if it wasn’t sold out, it was damn near close, with a capacity of around 5,500. That’s a pretty big come-up in a four-year span. A hardcore band getting this big is almost unheard of.
2. Never Enough is way better live.
I often find myself saying this with bands and albums, but I really enjoyed the new album a lot more live. It’s not that I didn’t like Never Enough, I just thought it was a little flatter than I expected when it landed. Live, all of that falls away. Songs like “Light Design” and “I Care” really stood out to me more in the live setting.
3. The camera visuals are a huge part of the performance.
A top-notch video crew is running around the entire show, and the camera work is next level. They’re showing the crowd, the band, and getting angles you don’t typically see when video is used at a concert. It’s almost like having a concert film of the show you’re actually standing in, playing behind the band. This absolutely blew me away.
4. The energy is beyond what you expect.
I think everyone knows what they’re going to get at a Turnstile show. Even knowing that, the energy still blows you back. Kids going wild, punks, metalheads, nerds, old, young - there’s a seriously diverse crowd for this band, and somehow all of it comes together once the music starts.
5. So, what’s next?
Last night’s setlist didn’t veer too far away from the older material, which is a little more traditionally hardcore. Hearing those songs actually got me thinking: what happens next? The band has clearly evolved from who they were then into the band they are now, and that was a pretty massive sonic leap. It makes me wonder where they go from here. If Never Enough is another step in that evolution, the next record could be another interesting directional shift for Turnstile.
